Greeks in Canada Project: Oral Histories

A Special Request
We encourage children and grandchildren to reach out to parents, grandparents, and elders in the community who may wish to participate. This is a rare and meaningful opportunity to preserve family history and honour the journeys that shaped our community.

Between the 1950s and 1970s, thousands of Greek immigrants came to Canada in search of opportunity and a better future. In doing so, they helped build vibrant communities and contributed profoundly to Canadian society. Today, their stories—and the stories of their families—form an essential part of our collective heritage.

To preserve this legacy, York University and the Hellenic Heritage Foundation Greek Canadian Archives have launched the “Greeks in Canada” project: an initiative dedicated to creating the first organized historical archive of Greek life in Canada.

We are inviting members of our community to take part in this important work by sharing their personal stories, experiences, and memories.

Interviews in Calgary
Interviews will be held at the Calgary Hellenic Community from May 6–10, with each session lasting approximately 60–90 minutes.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Contribute oral histories that will be preserved for future generations
  • Share photographs, letters, books, and other meaningful items for digitization
  • Help ensure that the Greek Canadian experience is documented and celebrated
With your permission, interviews will be recorded and archived at York University as part of the HHF Greek Canadian Archives. Participants may also choose to remain anonymous. There are no right or wrong stories—every experience matters.
